A Scarlatti Project. Staatsoper Berlin Under Den Linden 2019
Alessandro Scarlatti settles a score with love and its pitfalls in one of his cantatas, in which he calls love the »brutto figlio de pottana« (ugly son of a bitch). The interaction of love, professional success, frustration and despair as contemporary phenomena of the flexible human being are at the centre of Letizia Renzini’s performance, in which Scarlatti’s baroque works are mixed with electronics.
Selected cantatas by Alessandro and Domenico Scarlatti form the basis for the development of the piece. In addition to numerous operas, Alessandro Scarlatti, who was hugely influential in the groundbreaking Italian music of the 17th and early 18th century, composed nearly 800 cantatas – the largest group of works in his oeuvre. Hardly any other composer, on the other hand, ignored the cultural traditions, laws and conventions of the basso continuo age as radically as his son Domenico Scarlatti. The music-theatre performance of the Italian sound and video artist, DJane and performer Letizia Renzini combines music with various artistic genres and media to create a scenic-installative sculpture. Her works have been performed at the Venice Biennale, the Tanzeshus Stockholm, the Royal Opera House London and the Philharmonie Luxembourg. With Love, You Son of a Bitch Letizia Renzini is showing her first work at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden –
